Providing neuro affirming approaches to care

Therapy doesn't have to look one particular way

At Solace & Sanctuary, we believe there is no single right way to communicate, connect, regulate or experience the world.

Our approach is neurodiversity affirming, person-centred and client-led. Rather than asking you to fit yourself into the therapy, we work together to create a therapeutic experience that fits you.

Sometimes that might mean talking.

Sometimes it might mean moving, creating, noticing, experimenting, playing, being alongside a horse, or simply having space to be without having to explain yourself.

Low demand. High choice. Your pace

Therapy can sometimes feel like another place where there are expectations about what you should say, how you should behave, what you should achieve or how quickly you should make progress.

We take a different approach.

We don't expect you to engage in therapy in one particular way. We work collaboratively to find approaches that feel appropriate and useful for you.

You can have choices about what we do, how we communicate and how much you participate. We can slow down, change direction, take a break, move, make something, or simply spend time together.

We are interested in finding a pace and approach that supports your sense of choice, safety and participation, rather than assuming that one way of working will suit everyone.

It is to create enough safety, choice and connection for you to discover what works for you.

Therapy can be creative

With the horses, therapy might involve an obstacle course, movement, curiosity and problem-solving.

It might involve watching what happens when you change something, trying again, or finding a completely different way through.

Sometimes we might use art, sensory experiences or playful activities — including something as simple as collaboratively creating with the horse. Moving paint around in a pouch.

These experiences aren't about being good at art, completing an activity or getting the "right" answer.

They create another way to communicate, explore and notice.

We work collaboratively

You are the expert in your own experience.

Our role is not to decide what you need and then ask you to follow the plan.

We work with you.

Together, we can explore what helps, what doesn't, what feels comfortable, what feels too much, and what makes therapy feel worthwhile.

You don't have to make eye contact.

You don't have to sit still.

You don't have to have all the right words or explain everything straight away.

And you don't have to do something simply because it is what therapy is "supposed" to look like.

We offer a different way of being in therapy, an alternative to traditional therapy that may feel like another demand.

At Solace & Sanctuary, we are interested in creating something different

less pressure, more choice.
less performance, more presence.
less "should", more curiosity.
less doing therapy "right", more discovering what works for you.

You can come as you are.

We can start there.

Solace and Sanctuary would like to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s First People and Traditional Custodians. We value their cultures, identities, and their continuing connection to country, waters, kin, and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, recognizing their profound connection to country and their role as the first true storytellers and waymakers, living in harmony with nature.

We specifically acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work, the  Quandamooka People, and we extend our respects to First Nations culture and peoples, including their Elders past, present, and emerging. We recognize their ongoing connection to land, waters, and culture, and we honor the invaluable contributions they make to our community.
